Hirsteel is a third generation family-run business established for over 65 years.

Hirsteel is the trading division of Thomas Hirst & Son Ltd, a family business incorporated by Thomas Hirst in 1958, in the trading and recycling of metal and steel sections. His son joined the business aged 15 soon after and eventually took over its control, expanding into waste disposal, providing skips to the building trade and also creating the Hirsteel division. When Thomas’ grandson joined in 1995, having worked some years in the civil engineering sector, he concentrated on continuing building Hirsteel to the position it is today, providing reinforcement, structural and architectural steelwork to projects small and large, domestic and commercial to both builders and developers alike.

Extension steels

LOCATION: Surrey

A typical consignment ordered for supply only, manufactured according to the designs provided. Delivered with all fixings and installed by the builder. Hirsteel fulfil hundreds of these projects monthly!

Sixth form common room

SIZE: Circa 25 tonnes

LOCATION: Hampshire

The final installation of an intricate design, requiring accurate 3D survey and detailed drawings to enable construction within the confines of the existing atrium of this very old school building.

Wraparound balcony structure

LOCATION: Middlesex

The second of a two-stage assignment (this time to the the side and rear) of a property susceptible to flooding. Living accommodation is first floor and upwards and the client instructed architect and engineer to design this galvanised, cantilevered structure, manufactured and fitted by Hirsteel in the tightest of spaces!

In 2023, steel maintained its dominant position as the preferred structural framing material in key sectors of the UK construction industry...

"I ordered a steel to support roof construction of new extension (4 m beam). Needed pre drilled holes to meet engineers dimensions for rafter bolt holes. Discussed what was needed gave drawings. Hirsteel suggested different dimension holes to those on the drawings (due to an odd size). Spoke with engineer who agreed. Drawings re-done and delivered steel was spot-on within time agreed and bolted-up perfectly. Just about to order another 3 m beam."
